Question:
I am interested in installed a security system in my home. I expect to use quite a few zones and would like a system that has the following capabilities/attributes: 1. A reliable wireless capability for a limited number of zone 2. Ability to support centralized monitoring 3. A nice looking, easy to read and program control panel 4.Ability to interface to my home automation system (I have a JDS stargate). Could someone point me towards a manufacturer/product that would be a good choice?

Answer:
The Napco Gemini series should do the job for you. Napco’s systems are what we call “hybrids” — they have hard-wire and wireless capability. Central station monitoring capability is also built in. Napco Gemini really shines, however, in their Home Automation interface. The system can report all activity to the JDS via standard RS-232 serial connection. Napco provides a hardware/software kit (GEM AUTO) which includes an upgraded master control chip and softwar!
e disks. Napco’s website is at I agree with Robert that the Gemini should do the job, but I reccomend that you get the PCI MINI so you can program it from a PC. The keypad programming can be a little confusing for an inexperienced programmer. There are several panels that are easier to program from the keypad, but the ones I have looked at do not support all the features you asked about. I also have information on this system, which I sell to DIY’rs in my online store. The URL is in my signature line below.

Ademco Downloader (for linux)?

September 23rd, 2008

Question:
I would like to integrate my alarm control with my (linux-based) home automation system. My alarm control is an Ademco. I’d like to log various events and control the panel. Anyway, it seems like the easiest way to do this would be to port/reverse-engineer/whatever their ‘downloader’ software. Ademco (unsurprisingly?) has been not only unhelpful, but downright rude in some cases. Anyone want to help?

Answer:
ADEMCO is not rude. The word is professional and concerned. They just don’t want people not in the trade to have there software. If you want you panel parameters altered notify your installing company. If you do not have one, any yellow pages will help. Ther are also companies on the web that can help.

Norton Internet Security 2006

September 23rd, 2008

Question:
Norton Internet Security 2006 made my computer move at a snail’s pace?

I recently upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2005 and now I have Norton Internet Security 2006 on my pc with Windows 98 installed. Since the upgrade it takes at least 1000% longer in time to boot up and also to log on to the internet. I know of a free antivirus program from Avast.com and I think it may be better to replace the Norton with it. Has anyone had any experience with Avast? The Norton 2005 had less security features than the new 2006 program and now I believe my pc is overwhelmed even though I had enough capacity to load the 2006 software. My son has used Avast and he says it can’t hurt to try it. I’m a little leery and think since it is a free program that I might be inundated with all kinds of spam. Has any user of Avast out there had any security problem or dissatisfaction with Avast?

Answer:
Norton sucks…..there have been major problems with both Norton 2005 and !
2006 versions…our recommendation would be to totally remove the Nortons from your system. Steer clear of the free AV progs as these will not protect your pc properly.
Here in Australia we have always used and recommended the VET AntiVirus. The company that makes VET have just released the Etrust Internet Security Suite which contains the VET AV prog, email spam filter ,Zone Alarm Firewall and Pest Patrol spyware removal prog. The Etrust will consume less system resources than the Nortons will and will not slow down your pc

Question:

Answer:
it is easy to put a monitor in each room

1) where you have the recorder for the surveillance system, the monitor output can be connected to a Video Distributer. This means you connect the video cable for 1 monitor to the box, then you have 4 to 8 monitor outputs so you can connect multiple monitors.

Type in ‘cctv video distributor’ in Yahoo or google and it will show you local suppliers. You will be able to find pictures on what it looks like, Ones that are not brand name can be as cheap as $50

2) If you put a PC based surveillance system in the house, then you can still have multiple monitors but you will need a ‘ VGA Splitter’ again you can type this in your search engine to find the nearest supplier.

3) You can also use a wireless sender to another monitor in the house and just move the monitor around as you need to save a bit of money over buying that many monitors.

Answer:
I would recommend not getting wireless…

they do not always keep the feed going, at the theater I work with they have video wireless cameras to see if the set is in place, and the feed cuts out a lot and we sometimes can’t tell.

What is the best wireless security system that is connected to the Internet?

Question:
What is the best wireless security system that is connected to the Internet?

I am specifically looking for security systems for my home, not my computer.

Answer:
If you google wireless router comparisons you will find lots and lots to wade through.

For my own ideas:

Unless you have need of a longer-range router, don’t get one of the newer ones with longer range. (The longer the range, the greater the opportunity for others to find and use it.)

You want to be able to do/use the following:

-deliver hardware firewall (NAT), which will not respond to port-focused pings or inquiries from outside your network (operates in stealth mode)
-turn off the broadcast of the ID (each one comes with a factory installed default, e.g., linksys for Linksys routers)
-change that name, to name the now-not-broadcast ID to something meaningful to you
-MAC filtered (allow access only to those machines for which you have entered the MAC ID)
-WPA-level encryption

Sniffers (think police scanners for wireless frequencies) can detect and intercept the radio traffic between computers and routers. In principle, they can be used to identify the network name and forge a MAC to allow access. That is why encryption is essential, and for security, WPA is the tops available (I think). WEP encryption can be broken in a matter of seconds-to-minutes.

I have a Linksys, lower end router in my home that does all these things.
